What does Yoshino see as the problem and why is it problematic? What solutions does he offer?
According to Yoshino, the problem we have is with his idea of “covering”. According to him, covering means “to tone down a disfavored identity to fit into the mainstream.” (Yoshino 539). He believes this is the problem because it means that people are suppressing who they really are in order to fit into a specific status quo, so they are not exactly true to themselves. The one solution Yoshino seems to offer to this problem of covering is to talk to people without suppressing anything; in other words, to talk to people as “you” and not as a “mainstream” version of you.
